This section of the DQVIII damage formulas explains why the glitch exists. From Game FAQs:
For physical attacks-
1. Figure damage range using the Base Damage Formula
2. Choose a number from the range, that will be D
3. If Oomph is cast, D x 2
4. If there is a valid Weapon Modifier, D x Weapon Modifier
5. If there is a Skill Damage Modifer, D x Skill Modifier
6. If attacker in state of tension, D x Character Tension Modifier
7. If damage exceeds 9999, D = 9999
8. If target has an Attack Resistance, D x Attack Resistance Modifier
9. If target is in a state of Super High Tension, D x 0.7
10. If target is defending, D x 0.5
11. If skill has an attribute, D x Attribute Resistance Modifier
12. If attack hits a whole group or all enemies, D x Order Modifier
13. Round D to get damage
Notice how Step 11 is after the step where damage is changed to 9,999. The Attribute Resistance Modifier is a damage multiplier that deals with attributes such as Whoosh or Sizz.
Each enemy has certain weaknesses and resistances to various attributes, which are defined by the Attribute Resistance Modifier. It can exceed 1.0x, and in this case it was a 1.2x multiplier because of the Abominape's weakness (after using Divine Intervention) to the Whoosh attribute of Typhoeus' Maul. This 1.2x multiplier, being free from the damage cap, is what allowed Yangus' damage to exceed 9,999.
In other words, the cap was broken because the game applies the damage multiplier for elemental attributes AFTER it truncates damage to 9999. Strangely, the glitch won't work if the weapon used has a weapon damage multiplier (Dragon Slayer + Flame Slash, etc).
So, Hero's Dragon Slash cannot exceed 9,999 damage because it has no attribute, and is thus not affected by the Attribute Resistance Modifier. In fact, the only way he can do over 9,999 damage is if he uses Flame Slash with a weapon that lacks a weapon damage modifier. This can be seen in one of my other videos:
